Description: Litanies of this type predate Christianity: Greco-Roman poetry is full of formulaic prayers addressing the divinity by many different avatars. The Litany of All Saints, or Great Litany, is in call-and-response form, with the cantor naming the saint and the congregants responding, “Pray for us” (ora pro nobis).
